"I can remember snowy owls from my boyhood days on Long Island. During winters when lemmings and voles were scarce in the Canadian provinces, these magnificent birds would drift southward into the States to search for food. I can still see their ghostly forms gliding across the dunes. In this case, I did not know which background I liked better, the woodland with the stream or the very bleak, frozen meadow with the stream. So I did both."
