Wolves are an evergreen subject for print publishers, possibly
the all-time most popular animal among print buyers. Coheleach has no ready explanation for their popularity, but agrees that it cannot be simply dismissed as a fad.
This popularity works against an artist looking for an original
idea. Coheleach fell back on a theme he knows better than anyone: The predator/prey relationship. The prey, a deer, is suggested by the tracks in the snow. The wolves on its trail are intense. There is not a benign hair on their bodies, and the
viewer is not tempted in any way to reach out to pet one.
"I once said, half jokingly, that my favorite way to paint a cardinal was in the talons of a goshawk. I was mostly serious,
though, because the predator/prey relationship is almost as important to me just as it is the ultimate activity of the two parties to the chase."
